concrete kitchen
Garden designer Dug McCloud asked us to detail and manufacture this outdoor kitchen for comedian Danny Bhoy.
The construction of this kitchen is really interesting. We cast 12mm thick concrete panels to bond onto exterior ply carcasses. This gives the effect of solid concrete objects with the reality of using minimal material. We wanted to bring out the best concrete has to offer and used our knowledge to produce the flowing patterned effect within the concrete. The worktops are glass reinforced, again giving the effect of weight and substance whilst being hollow to reduce material without compromising on strength. The construction of the plinth beneath the pizza oven was high density blockwork in order to take the weight of the oven and the worktop has additional steel reinforcing.
We decided to utilise a shadow gap along the base of the units to give the structure a light, floating feel alongside performing the function of a traditional kickplate, making the workspace a comfortable ergonomic space. There's plenty of integrated storage space for wood and utensils, alongside a fold down bench for entertaining. The timber we used for cladding is a Scottish larch that will grey naturally over time. There's also a planter built in to bring the structure into the garden.
